One of the many questions I get asked as a hypnotherapist is what does it feel like to be hypnotised and is it natural? Well the simple answer is yes, hypnosis is extremely natural and you know exactly how it feels since you spend approximately 80% of your day in it. Imagine yourself sitting in bed at night, you’re relaxed but you’re still awake and aware of everything around you. You could if you wanted to open your eyes, move your arms but you feel like you could very easily drift into sleep. That’s hypnosis. When you daydream or go into autopilot, that’s hypnosis. When your mind relaxes at the end of the day, for example when you are watching TV, you’re eyes are open but you’re in hypnosis. That’s why all those TV adverts work so well!
So how does this natural state help you to give up smoking or lose weight or combat your fear of flying? Well when you relax your conscious mind and it almost switches off – that’s when your subconscious mind comes forward and almost takes over – your conscious mind is still there, it’s just not as present. This means that all those automatic feelings and behaviours that we don’t think about can be addressed. This is why with hypnosis, you can sometimes see results happen quickly because we are putting new and desired behaviours into the automatic, subconscious mind. This is the part of our mind which is responsible for our breathing, blinking and heartbeat, and that way we completely bypass the analytical conscious mind. What isn’t natural when seeing a hypnotherapist is the setting. Although we are used to going in and out of hypnosis everyday – we are completely unaware we are doing so. So when a hypnotherapist asks us to go into hypnosis, it’s very difficult for us to understand what that means, especially in such a clinical environment.
However hypnosis has been used for hundreds of years and even dates back to the ancient Egyptians, who wrote about the use of hypnosis through hieroglyphics but it was the Greeks who came up with the name hypnosis after ‘hypnos’ the word for sleep. This incredibly natural state of mind which has been used for hundreds of years is a truly remarkable way to open the mind and address issues an individual is facing by not only finding the cause, but also putting in lots of positive suggestions and new desired behaviours straight into the subconscious, which allows these new behaviours to become automatic responses.
The amount of clients I see who honestly do not believe they have been hypnotised during sessions is impressive – but I know they have experienced hypnosis through the responses during the session, but the only reason they believe they have not been hypnotised is because the truth is, hypnosis is not the weird trance state that people assume it is. So please don’t go away thinking hypnosis is scary and unnatural because it is in fact the opposite, open your mind to hypnotherapy because it is extremely natural, wonderfully powerful and a truly relaxing experience.
