Phobias with clients can either be very simple or can be very complex to get rid of. Sometimes you can see a client a couple of times and they will immediately feel a huge difference in their phobia, other times it can take a lot of practice and time to overcome a phobia. It is important to always have a goal in mind of how far you would like to progress. I used to have a terrible fear of spiders, I knew I would never want or allow myself to hold one but I can now use a glass or spider catcher to get rid of the spider and in that way I can be in control and gain independence by not having to call someone to help me remove it!

Phobias are a learned behaviour, whether you see someone scared of something and you learn to be scared, or whether you have a negative experience which leaves you feeling fearful, these reactions are usually learnt. We may not know where we learnt these behaviours or we may remember as clear as day what happened to us. But whatever the case we more often than not need to look at why we think this way and look at what we can do to change this way of thinking.

What Hypnotherapy Can Do To Help

There are many different techniques we can use to change this way of thinking, sometimes we will use our dial technique where we look at getting in control of your anxiety levels and we learn how to turn it down, so we can learn how to deal with the situation better, for example, a client with a phobia of spiders would use the dial to turn their panic levels down and get in control of their anxiety  so they can then get rid of the spider, which is the usual end goal for the majority of my clients with a spider phobia. They want to be able to get in control and be able to get rid of the spider without their panic levels getting out of control.

Another technique is the timeline, getting clients to see them now seeing how they would react and then changing that slowly into something which ultimately makes them laugh and smile so the situation really isn’t scary anymore. One of the best techniques is to also teach clients how to breathe and calm themselves down by just focusing on breathing. This is such an effective and practical technique; it allows you to regain control over your thoughts so you know you can deal with the situation at hand.

phobia hypnotherapy surreySometimes we do need to look at where these phobias are learnt so we can allow you to move on from the situation and remove the negative feelings associated with it, but other times it could just be practicing these techniques and making them as effective as we can through the use of hypnosis. Because in hypnosis we are addressing the subconscious mind, this is the part of our mind where all our automatic behaviours are stored our blinking and heart beat for example, so we can really address the automatic feelings of fear and replace them with feelings of calm so we can really take a step back and think about the situation in the logical way we want to. Sometimes it does take practice outside of sessions, those with a very intense fear I recommend practicing their breathing techniques by looking at pictures or by watching videos to help them feel calm in those situations, that way when they are faced with what they are fearful of in real life, they have practiced their techniques and they can get in control much better and much quicker. For our spider phobia example this would include looking at photos or documentaries on spiders and just focusing on breathing or what made them funny in the timeline technique, that way when it comes to getting rid of one in the house, you will be able to breathe through it and regain control, use your dial to reduce the panic and get rid of it, once you have done it the first time it becomes easier and easier.

Everyone is so unique when it comes to phobias as there are so many reasons why you may have a fear of spiders or small spaces, and lots of techniques to help. Hypnotherapy can be very effective in getting rid of unwanted behaviours and helping you move forward in your life, achieving whatever goals you set for yourself.
